Marine Corps Safety Excellence Award was awarded to Marine Corps Detachment Fort Leonard Wood by the Commandant of Marine Corps Safety Division.

Nominees for this award have made significantly greater contributions to safety than normally expected of those in their particular assignments during the fiscal year.

Things to consider in regards to this award greatly depend on the population in comparison to the criteria to include number of fatalities, number of privately owned vehicle mishaps, number of government operated vehicle miles driven, civilian on-duty injuries, safety training, safety promotional materials, personal protective equipment, safety administration, and contracted services are just examples of areas of excellence in safety.

The award consists of a commemorative wall plaque, a Marine Corps Safety Division commemorative coin and Secretary of the Navy Flag.

“Safety and Risk Management are indispensable to effectively prepare for and complete our mission, whether at home or deployed in harm's way," said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.

"Your safety accomplishments are proof positive of your mission safety command culture and your commitment to each other, to safety excellence, to the Nation, and to the Department of the Navy as a world class safety organization. You have justly earned the right to fly my SECNAV Safety Flag for the next year.”
