Sergeant Major Cox was born in Meridian, MS.  He attended and graduated from Kemper County High School in May 1992.  Upon graduating, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and attended recruit training at Parris Island where he graduated from Third Recruit Training Battalion in October 1992.  He attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, NC and the Basic Motor Transport Operator’s Course at Camp Johnson, NC.  Upon completion, he was assigned the MOS of 3531, Motor Transport Operator.

 

Sergeant Major Cox reported to 2d Battalion, 12th Marines in Twenty-nine Palms, CA in February of 1993.  Shortly thereafter, he deployed with Battery “E” to Okinawa Japan under the Unit Deployment Program.  He was promoted to the rank of Corporal in June of 1994. 

 

In December 1994, Sergeant Major Cox was temporarily assigned to Headquarters Battalion, Twenty-nine Palms, CA under the Fleet Assistance Program where he worked as an Administrative Clerk at the Family Service Center.  Corporal Cox was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in February of 1996.

 

Sergeant Major Cox received orders to Marine Corps Detachment, Fort Leonard Wood, MO in April 2006. While stationed there, he served as a Licensing NCO, Platform Instructor, and Class Commander.  He attended the Instructor Training Course aboard Fort Leonard Wood, the Sergeants Course at Camp Geiger, NC and the Staff Non Commissioned Officers Career Course at Quantico, VA. Sergeant Major Cox was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in April 1999.

 

In July 1999, Sergeant Major Cox reported to Parris Island, SC to attend Drill Instructor School. Upon completion, he was assigned to the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion.  During his tour at Parris Island, Sergeant Major Cox served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor and Battalion Drill Master. 

 

Upon completion of his tour at Parris Island, Sergeant Major Cox transferred to 2d Force Service Support Group, 2d Transportation Support Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC.   Shortly thereafter, he deployed to Kuwait/Iraq in support of OIF as the Company Gunnery Sergeant of Company B.   Sergeant Major Cox was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in April of 2004. 

 

In August 2004, Sergeant Major Cox deployed to Iraq in support of OIF II-2.  Upon returning, he received Temporary Assignment Orders to the 22nd MEU Service Support Group (MSSG 22).  In November 2005, Sergeant Major Cox deployed with MSSG 22 to Iraq in support of OIF 04-06. 

 

After returning in 2006, Sergeant Major Cox attended the Advance Course at Camp Geiger, NC. Upon graduating, he received orders to the Staff Noncommissioned Officers Academy for duty as an instructor. While assigned, he served as a Faculty Advisor and Physical Training Instructor for the Advanced Course.

 

In April 2008, Sergeant Major Cox was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant and received orders to Parris Island, SC where he served as the Company First Sergeant of Delta Company, First Recruit Training Battalion. 

 

In May 2010, Sergeant Major Cox was transferred to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and was assigned as the Company First Sergeant for Company A, 2d Radio Battalion.  He attended the United States Navy Senior Enlisted Academy in January 2011.  Shortly thereafter, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of OEF 11.2. Upon returning, Sergeant Major Cox attended the Marine Corps Senior Enlisted Professional Military Education Course and served as the Battalion Sergeant Major of  2d Radio Battalion  until he was promoted to his current rank in January 2013. 

 

Sergeant Major Cox assumed his post as Sergeant Major of Marine Combat Training Battalion East in January 2013.  His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star in lieu of fourth award, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star in lieu of third award and the Combat Action Ribbon.
