Lieutenant Colonel Gregory L. Jones graduated from The Citadel in 1997. After receiving his commission as a 2ndLt through the Officer Candidates School in August of 1997, he attended The Basic School, Quantico, VA. Upon graduation he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, Camp Lejeune, NC. From July 1998 to April 2000, he served as Platoon Commander in Company L where he deployed to the Mediterranean Sea with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit. Returning from deployment, he was assigned the duties of Commanding Officer, Headquarters Company, 6th Marine Regiment from April 2000 to May 2001.
Completing his first fleet tour, Lieutenant Colonel Jones was assigned to Officer Candidates School in Quantico, VA where he performed the duties of Executive Officer and Platoon Commander for numerous training companies. He also performed the duties as Tactics OIC where he supervised the instruction of Infantry Tactics to all Officer Candidates. He also served as the Coordinator of Student Activities where he supervised the screening process for all Officer Candidates.
In March 2004, Lieutenant Colonel Jones attended the Infantry Officer Advanced Course in Fort Benning, GA where he was a Distinguished Graduate. In July 2004, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marines as a combat replacement in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He deployed again from March-September 2006 and August 2007 to March 2008 as the Commanding Officer, Company A and Operations Officer in support of OIF.
In 2008-2009 Lieutenant Colonel Jones attended Command and Staff College during the 2008-2009 academic year. During this school year, he earned a Masters of Military Science Degree and was a Distinguished Graduate. After Command and Staff College Lieutenant Colonel Jones assumed the duties as Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Recruiting Station, Cleveland, OH from 2009 to 2012.
From 2012-2014, Lieutenant Colonel Jones then moved to Hanoi, Vietnam to assume the duties of Deputy Commander, Detachment 2, Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command where he facilitated the repatriation of 10 sets of remains of U.S. service members missing from the Vietnam War.
Lieutenant Colonel Jones’ personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (Gold Star in Lieu of Third Award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon. He is married to the former Ms. Nicole C. Manes of Mount Pleasant, SC and has three sons: Andrew, Alexander, and Nicholas.
