Gunnery Sergeant Christopher J. Whitman graduated from MCRD Parris Island in November 2000. After graduating from the School of Infantry in January 2001, he reported to 3d Battalion, 2nd Marines (3/2) for duty. In December 2001, then Lance Corporal Whitman deployed to Okinawa, Japan for Unit Deployment Program. His next deployment was to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom I, still with 3/2, but this time as a Corporal. Gunnery Sergeant Whitman’s unit was then tapped for Anti-Terrorism Unit, and he was deployed to the Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2004. Gunnery Sergeant Whitman deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III in 2005. He returned from this deployment as a Sergeant. He served in billets including 60mm Mortar Gunner, Rifle Team Leader, and Squad Leader. His last billet with the unit was 60mm Mortar Section Leader.
Upon return from this deployment, Gunnery Sergeant Whitman reported to Marine Barracks 8th & I en route to Marine Security Company at the Presidential Retreat, Camp David. While at Camp David, he was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant. His billets included Infantry Unit Leader and Site Security Officer until October 2008.
Gunnery Sergeant Whitman reported to 3d Battalion, 6th Marines in November 2008. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 and 2011 and to Amman, Jordan in 2012. He served as Rifle Platoon Sergeant, Platoon Commander, and Company Gunnery Sergeant. He was Combat Meritoriously promoted to his current rank in December of 2011. Gunnery Sergeant Whitman reported to the School of Infantry East in July 2012.
After Graduating Marine Combat Instructor Course, Gunnery Sergeant Whitman was assigned as Company Gunnery Sergeant, Delta Company, Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry East.
Gunnery Sergeant Whitman is currently assigned to Marine Combat Instructor’s Course , School of Infantry-East as the Chief Instructor.
Gunnery Sergeant Whitman attended the Combat Water Safety Swimmer’s Course, Zodiak Coxswain’s Course, Marine Combat Instructor of Water Survival School, Martial Arts Instructor’s Course, Sergeant’s Course, Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape School, High Risk Personnel Course, Infantry Unit Leader’s Course, Marine Combat Instructor Course and The Advanced Course.
Gunnery Sergeant Whitman’s personal decorations include The Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device, Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with 2 gold stars in lieu of 3d award), and Combat Action Ribbon (with gold star in lieu of 2d award).
