Parris Island Youth Center celebrates Nat'l Kids Day

The Parris Island Youth Center celebrated its Annual Boys and Girls Club Association National Kid's Day 2006 Sept. 20.

The bash, which was open to military dependents and active-duty, retired and Department of Defense personnel, was held to reward its current patrons for their support and to entice families new to the area to see what the center has to offer.

"The event is designed to get adults and children to know each other by directing their attention towards their likes, dislikes, thoughts and ideas and sharing them while playing all the games we provided for them," said Nelson.

"The event provided the families with fun games, food and music so they could have a good time together," added Nelson.

An inflatable bouncer, putt-putt golf, mini bowling, sack races and card board carnival games were among the many festivities for the children and parents to enjoy together.

"I have never seen almost two-thirds of the people here, so I hope this means we will be getting new families to bring their kids here on a regular basis," said Nelson.

"The Marine Corps Community Services-South Carolina donated  food for the event like hot dogs, chips and sodas for anyone who showed up. It made it easier for families to come here, because they didn't have to miss out on the fun to  cook a meal for their families," added Nelson.

The event, sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club of America, is usually held the third Saturday of September, but can be held five days prior to or after the set date.

"This event brought many families together and showed no matter your age you can still have fun with your children. It feels really good when you walk out from the office and see a 60-year-old man playing ping pong with his 7-year-old grandson," said Nelson.

Boys and Girls Club Annual Kid's Day celebration will continue to happen for years to come and will keep bringing families closer together by having them spend quality time with each other and learning the things they have in common, concluded Nelson.
