Sergeant Major- Marine Corps Detachment Fort Lee

Eric B. Sutton was born in Homestead AFB, FL. and raised of all over the world.  He enlisted in October 1984 and underwent recruit training at 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, Calif.

Private First Class Sutton reported to 2nd Maintenance Battalion, BSSG Camp Lejeune N.C. for duty. He served in variety of billets during training evolutions and deployments to include training at for A.P. Hill and participation in Operation Just Cause, Panama.

Cpl Sutton was re-assigned in 1989 to 3rd FSSG, 3rd Maintenance Battalion, Engineer Maintenance Company, Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan.  During his tour he was sent to the Philippines in support of Volcano relief.

Sergeant Sutton was granted lateral move authority in 1990 to Bulk Fuel Specialist and was assigned to 8th Engineer Support Battalion, Bulk Fuel Company where he went to England AFB to participate in Ship to Shore fuel transfer operations.

In 1993 Sergeant Sutton was reassigned to 3rd FSSG, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, Bulk Fuel Company where he participated in Tandem Thrust in Australia.

In 1998, Sergeant Sutton went to Parris Island and attended Drill Instructor School, upon completion of Drill Instructor School he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, Kilo Company as a Drill Instructor, Experience Drill and Senior Drill Instructor. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in Oct 1999.

November 2001 Staff Sergeant Sutton was assigned to Marine Corps Detachment Fort Lee, Va. serving as a Bulk Fuel Instructor, Joint Service Chief Instructor, and Detachment S-3 Operations Officer. He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in 2003.

In May of 2004 Gunnery Sergeant Sutton was reassigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 371, Yuma, Ariz. He deployed to Al Anbar Province, Iraq and was selected for First Sergeant. Upon his selection in May 2006, 1st Sgt. Sutton received orders to Golf Battery, 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines and deployed twice. During the deployments Golf Battery provided convoy security detachments as well as direct fire support to Regimental Combat Team 1 & 6, with fire bases in Baharia and Al Taqqdeum, Iraq.

In July 2009, 1st Sgt. Sutton was assigned to School of Infantry-East, Infantry Training Battalion and served with Alpha Company and Headquarters & Instructor Company.

In July of 2011, Sgt. Maj. Sutton was reassigned to Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, as Air Station sergeant major and with 3rd Radio Battalion from November 2012 to July 2014. In September 2014, Sgt. Maj. Sutton reported to his present duty as the sergeant major for Marine Corps Detachment Ft. Lee, Va.

His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal with four gold stars, and Navy Marine Corps Achievement with two gold stars.
