Nutritious diet imperative to Airmen’s good health

Like a car needs fuel, a person's body needs proper nutrition to replenish itself and function at peak performance.

In today's Air Force, it's imperative that Airmen know the importance of nutrition and how it plays a dominant role in their life.

"It is imperative that one be well fueled to perform well," said Kathy Wein, from the 375th Medical Group nutritional medicine flight. "Optimal nutrition enhances ability to train and perform, improves concentration, increases energy level, increases endurance, and shortens recovery time."

Exercise alone does not provide these benefits, she said.

"Food is the fuel for your body," Wein said. "Optimal or performance nutrition includes healthy balance of carbohydrate, protein, and fat, adequate supply of vitamins and minerals, nutrient dense foods and proper hydration."

Wein also noted some simple tips to help improve Airmen PT test scores along with proper exercise.

"Three to four hours before workouts or PT test, Airmen should have a meal that is carbohydrate-rich, a small amount of protein, low in fat and low in fiber."

Some meal examples to try are: fruit and yogurt smoothie with low fat granola, oatmeal with brown sugar and almonds with fat-free milk and a banana, or peanut butter and honey on toast with a instant breakfast drink.

While physical activity is the key factor in healthy living, nutrition should not be overlooked.

"Just by doing something as simple as changing up your diet and exercising regularly, you give yourself a chance to live a better and healthier life," said Wein.

Lt. Col. Benji Jackson, 375th Force Support Squadron commander, said nutrition is a fundamental building block for long term fitness.

"The 375th FSS provides healthy options at its' eateries," he said. "Partnering nutritious eating with a dedicated fitness regimen will keep all of us in a high quality of life for our entire career and beyond."
