The depot School Liaison office hosted an information fair and presentation titled Fall in 2 Success at the recreation center August 28.

The event was geared toward parents of school-aged children who are either new to the area or just new to the school environment and unaware of exactly whom they should voice their questions and concerns.

The main focus of the event was to give the families the knowledge they need to succeed, but it also introduced families to the depot School Liaison, Kirsten Webb.

The mission of the school liaison is to improve the quality of life for military children by creating connectivity between military families, schools and the Marine Corps in order to ease educational transitions.

“They (the families) are either new to the area or about to leave the area,” said Webb. “And they are not sure who to talk to in regards to school needs.”

Because of the constant rotation of duty stations every three to four years, most military families are at a disadvantage when the school year starts. Often times because of the constant relocation, military families get into a short term mindset said Webb.

“Just because families are only in one area for a few years doesn’t mean they should try to do things on their own,” said Webb.

While the children enjoyed a movie in the recreation center’s theater, the parents and Webb discussed topics like homework help, setting routines, organizing time and getting involved with their children’s schools.

Webb also informed parents about how the school liaison office can help by providing assistance with things like inbound and outbound transfers, assistance with school location choices and home schooling regulations.

After the presentation, parents visited the many booths set up around the recreation center where organizations such as Military One Source, Family Readiness Officers, depot Museum, library and Child, Youth & Teen Program displayed the resources they had available for both parents and students to take advantage of during the school year.

All the information covered during the event is available by contacting the school liaison office at (619) 524-8032.
