Semper Fit Health Promotions, the Single Marine Program, Fitness Center, Depot Safety and Substance Abuse Counseling Center sponsored a Wellness Expo at the depot Exchange Mall which had stands from local farmer’s markets, displays from medical clinics and interactive stands, May 11.

The event kicks off to the Depot’s 5th annual 101 Days of Summer Challenge. The challenge will last through August 19. The program offers a variety of competitions and educational opportunities.

“The different booths had a lot of good information for people to take advantage of about staying healthy,” said Cpl. Rene Silva, Military Border Liaison Unit.

The Wellness Expo and the upcoming events are meant to raise the awareness of substance abuse, the dangers and consequences of illicit drug use and promote responsible alcohol use.

“The health and well being of the active duty servicemembers here at MCRD is a priority for not only the Marine Corps, but for MCCS Semper Fit Health Promotions,” said Andrea Callahan, Health Promotions Coordinator, Marine Corps Community Services. “This event provides Marines, Sailors, and Coastguardsmen an opportunity to learn about the latest health and fitness information in a fun and informal setting.”

The event included free giveaways, food samples, interactive booths, a blood drive and health and fitness demonstrations. There was also a local San Diego Farmer’s Market at the event. This provided a selection of fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers for purchase. There were stands with eggs, kettle corn, and honey.

“This event not only caters to the active duty, but to their families and to Department of Defense civilians and retirees,” said Callahan.

“I would guess that we had around 600-700 attendees,” said Callahan. More active duty Marines were seen out at the event this year than in previous years. In years past, the expected turnout has been 300-500 attendees.

Those who were unable to attend the expo can attend the following upcoming 101 Days of Summer events: Single Marine Program BBQ, May 26; Run Clinic, May 27; Martial Arts Expo and Men’s Health Fair, June 11; Sun Safety Mini Fair July 7; SMP Video Game Tournament, July 10; Healthy Cooking Class, July 14; Weightlifting Clinic, to be announced; Ongoing Functional Fitness Classes and a Fight Gone Bad Competition August 19.
