California Highway Patrol Community Outreach Officer F. Espiritu speaks to Marines and Sailors aboard the Depot during a summer safety stand down here June 28. Espiritu, a former Marine, warned the audience about dangerous trends he’s recently seen on the road in Southern California, including driving under the influence, texting while driving and excessive speeding. “Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for young adults,” said Espiritu. “It’s my job to come out and educate [service members] so they can be careful out there and not do anything to risk their career or their lives.”

The 23rd annual Globe and Anchor Salute was held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront for approximately 250, guests including more than 10 veterans who served during what is often referred to as the “Forgotten War.” Last year, the honor society honored veterans from World War II.

Two boys work on their control skills by maintaining continuous movement of the ball for as much time as possible during the Marine Corps Community Services Youth Sports one-day tennis clinic at Andy Bower Courts here, June 18. “We are trying to teach them that exercise and sports are fun,” said Karen Ronney, tennis coach, San Diego Hall of Champions. “We’re also trying to make sure their first tennis experience is fun and easy.”

One of the Martial Arts Instructors from Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, motivates Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps by doing the arm strech with the cadets. The 116 cadets came from Cathedral High School, Elsinore High School, Santiago High School, and Vista High School are attending a six day AF JROTC summer challenge. The afternoon of day five consisted of the cadets taking on the Confidence Course. ''This is a basic training experience for the cadets while developing leadership, teamwork, and esprit de corps," said retired Senior Master Sgt. Marvin Morris, Enlisted AF JROTC instructor from Elsinore High School. Morris says this is the first time they have done any training at MCRD and is a good orientation of the military for the first year cadets.

Medical regrouped and won the second game, forcing another game to break the tie. Finance won the third match, giving them a 2-1 victory in the best two-out-of-three format.
