Self-service finance website puts Marines in charge

Anyone who's ever run out of patience waiting for a leave and earnings statement or to start or change an allottment, knows the process can sometimes be time consuming and inconvenient.

To help speed it up, the Defense Finance Accounting System Office has set up the Employee/Member Self-Service System website to allow personnel to access certain pay items without using paper forms or going to the finance office.

The E/MSS helps military and civil service personnel save time by putting them in control of viewing and printing their LES, changing allottments, making changes to their Thrift Savings Plan fund, savings bonds, or viewing paid travel vouchers all without using paper forms. With the service, users are able to manage their account at their convenience without having to worry about when their finance office is open.

Another benefit of the system is reliability. Some of the changes made will be posted immediately and users can feel safe knowing the website is secured with encryption to make sure no one can read the information being transmitted. Changes made to the users' pay information go through the same checks for accuracy as the paper forms.

Representatives from DFAS will be at the depot conducting briefings about the E/MSS website next week. They will be available from 9-10 a.m., at the Depot Theater on Aug. 28 for personnel with a last name beginning with the letters A-M, and on Aug. 29 for personnel with last names beginning with N-Z. A DFAS representative will also be available Aug. 28 and 29 from 10:30 a.m.-noon and 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Lyceum for members to get a Personal Identification Number to access E/MSS.

More information about E/MSS is available at emss.dfas.mil.
