MCRD/ERR PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. -- Marines from the 2nd Recruit Training Battalion enjoyed a day with their families during a monthly Family Fun Day Sept. 9.
"These events, which are a continuous annual tradition of Second Battalion, are designed to build unit camaraderie and for the families of Marines to have a good time," said Lt. Col. Jim Gfrerer, commanding officer, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion.
The event was held at the All-Weather Training Facility, which according to Gfrerer, was chosen because of the building's proximity to the battalion area and the possibility of inclement weather.
"This area is great because working drill instructors from Second Battalion can rotate shifts to spend time with friends and family," he said.
The event featured many activities such as face painting, horse shoes, bean bag toss, children's movies, sports games and a static fire truck display for the children of the families, he said.
The Marines and their families spent the afternoon eating a variety of foods brought to the event such as hamburgers and hot dogs, and also enjoyed home-cooked meals, side dishes and desserts.
According to Gfrerer, the Marines of 2nd RTBn. hold events such as this one every month. Past gatherings have included Christmas parties and Easter egg hunts.
"We have a philosophy here in Second Battalion: Mission first, Marines and family always.
"Our goal in Second Battalion is to make sure our hard working drill instructors and their families are able to come out and have fun outside of the workplace," concluded Gfrerer.
The next scheduled event will be a Battalion Wives Windshield tour, Oct. 5th, which will take the wives on an in-depth tour of the Depot, including recruit training areas.
