MCRD PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. -- Parris Island hosted the first Eastern Recruiting Region Information System Coordinator Conference at the Four Winds, May 20-23.
The purpose of the conference was for the information system coordinators, who are currently working for the Eastern Recruiting Region, to meet and discuss the direction of their occupational field as an entire region.
“We usually have a separate conference for each recruiting district,” said Angela E. Williams, 38, the information system manager for 6th Marine Corps District. “This year, we felt there was a need to get together as a region and discuss our goals and objectives so we could be more efficient doing our job.”
According to Michael Basilone, 46, the information assistance coordinator for 6th Marine Corps District, there is one ISC working for each recruiting station in the Marine Corps Recruiting Command.
“Our job is to provide assistance to the recruiters to make their work more efficient,” Basilone said. “We provide them with printers, computers, network connectivity and anything else they need to do their job.”
Another objective discussed in the conference was a way for all the recruiting stations in each district to use the same format in their computer networks.
Recruiting stations don’t use Navy Marine Corps Intranet, which is the Internet system used by most of the Marine Corps.
Instead, they use a separate network to communicate and do all their work.
The conference allowed the ISCs to discuss a way to make sure all the recruiting districts use the same format on the computer networks, said Williams, who is from Beaufort, S.C.
“All the ISCs use the same system,” Williams added. “We got together and started collecting ideas from each other to make the system run smoothly.”
According to Capt. Morgan C. Chandler, the deputy assistant chief of staff for the Eastern Recruiting Region, the turnout for the conference was great.
“We had an ISC representing each command that the Eastern Recruiting Region supports,” added Chandler, who is from Tustin, Calif.
“As of right know, the plan is to have yearly events rotating through the districts,” said Basilone, from Bethlehem, Pa. “This event exceeded our expectations, and I look forward to future events”
