Colonel Richard J. Schmidt

Colonel Schmidt is a Nebraska native and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1993. He began his career as a ground intelligence and reconnaissance officer, and later became a special operations officer. Before assuming command of Headquarters Battalion, Training and Education Command, he served as the Deputy Commander for Special Operations Command Africa.

His command assignments include Platoon Commander at 3d Reconnaissance Company and 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (SOC); Team Commander, NATO Stabilization Force Bosnia; Deep Reconnaissance Company Commander in 3d and 1st Reconnaissance Battalions; Production & Analysis Company Commander at 1st Intelligence Battalion; Commanding Officer, 1st Marine Raider Support Battalion; and Commander, Joint Special Operations Task Force (P) - Somalia.

His operational deployments include Eastern Europe, Southwest Asia, Latin America, and East Africa. He most recently commanded Joint Special Operations Task Force (P) - Somalia in support of Operation OCTAVE SHIELD.

Colonel Schmidt’s staff assignments include Assistant S-2, 4th Marine Regiment; Operations Officer, 3d Reconnaissance Battalion; Executive Officer, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion; J35 Counterterrorism Chief, United States Southern Command; the Defense Intelligence Agency, Washington, D.C. and US Embassy La Paz, Bolivia; AC/S G-2, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command; and Chief of Staff, Special Operations Command Africa. He holds Masters Degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School and the Naval War College. He is a Latin America Foreign Area Officer and a graduate of the Spanish Armed Forces Command and Staff Course.
